Jalandhar/Phagwara, Mar 16

Even as most parties in the state are setting their poll agenda around Panthic issues, including sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib at Bargari and killing of two youths at Behbal Kalan, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal says these will not be the main issues.

On the sidelines of workers’ meet organised at Jalandhar Cantonment and Phagwara today, Sukhbir cited reasons for forming such an opinion. “Everyone knows that the Congress is trying to exploit religious sentiments of people by raking up these issues. By doing so, it is diverting people’s attention from its failures. People know that it was all a Congress-created drama. The Bargari Morcha was in place till the time the government wanted them to be there. They lifted it when the government wanted them to do so.”

The former Deputy Chief Minister claimed: “People now do not believe in those guys who sat there. Now that the Bargari Morcha candidates are themselves in poll fray, you will see that their security deposits will get forfeited. When this happens, everyone will know things for themselves.”

Asked about his stand on seeking support of the Dera Sacha Sauda, he said: “The Akal Takht Jathedar has given a verdict against them. As a Sikh and as president of the Akali Dal, I will go by the dictum of the supreme Sikh body.”

On the verdict being in place even in 2017 when the SAD had sought its support, he said: “At that time Akali Dal did not do anything. Candidates from all parties as individuals approached the dera for support.”

Not directly naming the dera in question, he said: “Any dera, if found guilty of sacrilege, should face death penalty.”

SAD observes ‘Vishwasghat Divas’

  • Chandigarh: The SAD-BJP on Saturday observed “Vishwasghat Divas” on the completion of two years of the Congress government, alleging that the party had failed to honour its commitments made in the poll manifesto.

  • Leaders and workers of the alliance organised road shows and dharnas in all Assembly constituencies of the state, including Amritsar, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali and Gurdaspur. Even smaller towns witnessed supporters airing their grievances against the government.

  • Party leaders at these gatherings alleged that the government had failed on all fronts and all sections, be they students, farmers, teachers, government employees, industrialists, labour or Dalits, all were feeling cheated. TNS
