Phagwara/Sangrur, March 15

The police have booked around 100 farmers for allegedly blocking highways in Phagwara on Thursday. The farmers have been protesting against non-payment of their dues by private sugar mills.

Three farmer leaders, including Satnam Singh Sahni, Kulwant Singh, and Manjit Singh Rai, have been booked by name, while an FIR has been lodged against 100 unidentified protesters.

They have been booked under Sections 188 and 283 of the IPC and Section 8-B of the NH Act. The farmers claimed local sugar mills have not paid their dues worth Rs 53 crore. The dharna was lifted after the mill authorities assured to pay Rs 30 crore by March 26.

Meanwhile, in Sangrur, the cane growers’ protest continued for the 9th day as they refused to lift blockade from the Sangrur-Dhuri road without getting their money paid by the Dhuri Sugar Mill. “We will not lift blockade without the release of our money. We have decided to intensify our agitation in a day or two,” said Harjeet Singh, a member of the cane growers’ panel.
