Moga, March 13

After the implementation of the model code of conduct following the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, the Municipal Corporation, Moga, has announced to hold camps from March 14 to 18 to make trade licence of businessmen and vendors.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that it may influence the trading community to vote in favour of the Congress. The MC has scheduled to hold camp in the main bazaar near Baag Gali on March 14, Akalsar road on March 15, Amritsar road on March 16 and Court road on March 18, which is likely to benefit more than 5,000 traders/businessmen and vendors in the city.

Navdip Singh Sangha, spokesperson, AAP, alleged that MC Commissioner Anita Darshi was working under the influence of the Congress leadership, particularly local legislator Dr Harjot Kamal.

“The Commissioner is organising the camps for issuing trade licence to vendors and traders who were affected due to the removal of encroachments. It will help them get alternative space for business activities,” he said.

Senior Deputy Mayor Anil Bansal said the state government had issued a notification on March 8 under Section 21 of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, just 48 hours before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections to allot space to 592 vendors for carrying out their business activities.

Bansal said the policy to issue trade licence was issued by the government in 2016, but the successive commissioners of the local body did not issue the licence to even a single trader, businessman or vendor in the city during these years. The Commissioner got printed trade licence certificates and fee receipt booklets just a few days ago.

There are about 14,000 commercial establishments in Moga city, including 4,000 vendors, which as per the law require trade licence to carry out their business activities.
