Arms, ammo recovered from under-construction house

Arms, ammo recovered from under-construction house

Patiala, March 15

The Patiala police have recovered arms and ammunition, including grenades and detonators, from an under-construction house here.

They said the arms were recovered on Wednesday after which a case was registered under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act and Section 5 of the Explosive Substance Act, 1908, against unidentified persons at the Civil Lines police station.

Ramanjeet Singh, SHO at the Civil Lines police station, said three grenades, an AK 47 rifle, a stain gun, a magazine, live cartridges, a butt stain gun, a bonnet 7.62 rifle and a detonator box were recovered from a house of a local resident in the Officers’ Colony. Later, a bomb squad was called from Punjab Armed Police, Jalandhar, to diffuse the explosives.

The police said arms and ammunition were buried for long and were perceived dead. Col Jasmael Singh, a resident of Officers’ Colony, was reconstructing his house when the ammunition were found from underneath.

“He was getting his house reconstructed from the very base. He is a serving Armyman and his father was also in the Army. The arms could have been buried before the house was constructed in 1987. We have also contacted the Army and will send them the serial number of the weapons to check if they have any record of the same,” the SHO said. The bombs will be sent to forensic science laboratory in Chandigarh, he said. — TNS
